Make warehouse safety a priority with these tips

Warehouse safety is a concern for everyone using these services for their business. Warehouses can store tons of things from hazardous liquids, chemicals, gases, or non-hazardous substances. However, each one of them is a safety concern due to a large number of materials they hold and the bulkiness of the containers.

Thus, the owners of such a warehouse need to make safety a priority if they want to avoid any accidents involving fatal injury or death of any worker. Also, when hazardous substances leak, it can impact the warehouse itself & also the environment.

On that account, we are sharing a few tips that will aid you in making warehouse safety a priority for you always.

Use floor bunding for chemicals or hazardous liquids

Floor bunding is one of the best ways to ensure safety in your warehouse. Not only does it help contain any spills or leaks from drums harboring liquids or chemicals. It can create a barrier for other heavy machinery or equipment. That ensures the safety of the material inside and also for the people who are handling them.

Floor bunding comes in a variety of materials, from rubber, Urethane, Aluminum, and more. Choose the one as per the need & the material you are trying to hold inside the bunding barrier.

Make sure everyone has proper training & knowledge about the safety precautions

The owners of the warehouse will have tons of safety precautions in place. However, it will not do you any good, if the employees are not aware of them. Therefore, make sure that every new employee in your warehouse gets familiarized with every risk-management strategy that you have in place.

Moreover, the veterans must also keep themselves updated on the security precautions. If there is an addition to these, have a seminar regarding the same. Also, have a safety committee in place that can look after the proper use of safety protocols.

Use proper storage containers

The warehouse will not be safe if you are not using the correct storage containers for every material. The first step towards figuring this out is to determine the type of material in it. If it is a chemical, you will need to figure out which and then use an appropriate container that uses a sturdy material for storing the items.

For instance, drums are a classic storage option for chemicals or hazardous liquids.

Have labels

Ensure that every container has a placard or label informing the workers about the material inside the containers. If they are unaware, it can lead to problems. However, when they know, they will take full precaution & handle the container smartly and use proper tools, like a drum trolley for drum containers & more.

Be quick in case of spills

If there is any spill or accident, be quick to take action. The longer you wait, the more severe the case can be. To ensure immediate action, you need to have a CCTV camera in place to monitor everything. Also, have cleaning supplies & other tools, like a fire-extinguisher in place. It will help you clean up the mess before it becomes chaotic fast.

Safety above all! This needs to be on your mind when handling a warehouse, especially dealing in chemicals. Use these tips & follow safety guidelines to the tee.
