Got a call from a debt collector? Read this!

No one likes trouble and having debt is certainly one of the biggest problems you will face.
Numerous people all over the world are facing serious debt issues. They either forget to pay
their debts on time due to this fast-paced life, or you don’t have enough money to pay off the debt.

But this delay in payment has consequences. The creditor can hire an international collection
firm like Cedar Financial Business to collect the pending debt. The collector will contact you
and convince you to pay the debt by following rules laid for a debtor’s safety. But they can
update your credit report with a collection which means your credit score will decrease.
Below, we will learn who collectors are and how to deal with them.
Who are debt collectors?
Debt collectors are third party collection agencies that collect pending debts on behalf of the
original lender.
They collect all types of debt like medical debt, credit card debt, loans, student loans, business
debts, and so on. Some firms collect a specific debt, while others collect all types of debt. A
debt collector works for commission, and after they collect the debt, they get a 25%-45% cut
from the whole recovered account.
Why do debt collectors call you?
Sometimes intentionally or unintentionally, we forget to pay our debts or some utility bills or so
on. When the number of missing payments keeps increasing, the creditor hires a debt collector
to collect the debt. The reason a collector is hired is that the debtor has:

  • Not paying his/her credit card bills
  • Has pending installments for medical or student loan
  • Mortgage or so on.
How a collector reaches you?
  • The original creditor provides the collector with your contact information. A collector uses that
information to call you and send you letters.
  • If they are unable to contact you through this, they contact your office or your friends and family. If still unable to track you, they use various databases and computer programs
to track you.
  • Once they make contact with you, they give you five days to verify the debt if you want.
  • You can send a written letter asking to validate the debt, they hold the entire proceedings
for these five days.
How to pay the debt?
You have two options when it comes to paying off the debt. First, you can pay the whole amount
in lump-sum through cash or cheque. But if the debt amount is too big and you don’t have enough
money, you can let the collectors know.
A reputable collection firm like Cedar financial will help you make the payment in installments.
What will happen if you don’t pay off the debt?
Well, having a pending debt is never good for your financial status. A collector can update your
credit report with a collection, which will decrease your credit score. It means that in future you
will face issues when it comes to getting a loan approved, as lenders will see you as a risky debtor.
You can also get entangled in a lawsuit, and if you lose it, your assets are taken over.
I hope you have gained much knowledge about debt collectors through this and will work with them
to pay-off your debt easily.

Have questions about debt collection? We have answers

No one likes to be in debt, but sometimes it becomes hard to pay the amount due to
circumstances. When a person misses a few payments, the lender can hire a debt collection
agency or sell your debts to a collector. They have various ways through, which they contact
a person, and collect the pending amount.
Don’t worry, they don’t harass the debtor, but work within the law to get the money the debtor
owes to the creditor back. But debt collectors have a reputation of being scary, and when they
call a debtor, they get overwhelmed and nervous. It is all because people don’t have much knowledge about the debt collection agency, and how it works. They have many questions,
and, in this blog, we will try to answer some of them.
Here are some questions that most people have about debt collectors, and the answers
to them.
Question 1: Can a debt recovery agent contact you in the office?
A debt collection agency like Cedar financial can call you in your office. They are legally allowed to.
But you have the legal right to ask them not to call you at work if you don’t prefer to. You can write
them a letter or tell them on call that your employers don’t appreciate you calling at work. Once you
make the request, they have no right to contact you in your office. If they do call you, it only has to
be about telling you that there is a lawsuit against you. You can visit us for debt collection queries.
Question 2: What methods they use to contact you?
They initially write to you or call you at home of office or post you. If neither of these methods works,
they can use other methods to contact you. If the debtor is untraceable, they have the option to
use a computer system that has various databases to track down the debtor.
Question 3: Can a collector call you at any time or is there a specific time?
A debt collector can call you only between 8:00 am to 9:00 pm. They cannot call you before or
after this. They can only call you after or before this time if you permit them too.
Moreover, if you are in the office at this time, the collector can call you there, but as we mentioned
above, you can ask them not to.
Question 4: Can a collector call your neighbors or family?
A debt collector can call your family, friends, or even your neighbor only to trace you or find out
how to contact you. But they cannot tell them the reason for contacting you or call them again.
They can only ask for your contact or address/
Question 5: Is there someone who a collector can inform about the debt?
Yes, a collector can tell about the debt to the delinquent’s spouse or an attorney and no one else.
Question 6: Do a debt collector follows any rules?
Yes, every country and state has some rules that guide the collector and ensures that no debtor
is abused or harassed by the debtor.
