5 topics to never talk about a networking event

One of the worst things about a networking event is making small talks. That too with people whom you are meeting for the first time. That is the reason why the thought of going to a networking event intimidates people.

Yet making small talk is essential. It helps break the ice barrier and find a common theme that can connect you two. Only then will you be able to network with something. Yes, conversation plays an important role. Taking a digital business card will not initiate a conversation. You share it for following up, not to start.

Well, in this blog, we cannot help you make small talk. However, we can ensure that you do not do it in the wrong manner. That means steering away from a few topics that can lead to arguments or worse.

Here are a few topics you should never talk about in a networking event.

1.  Politics

Politics is not the right topic to start a conversation at a networking event. If you wish to discuss world politics, it is best to do it with friends or family. Starting a conversation about an event with a person with whom you wish to network is a bad idea.

The political climate is currently getting worse. Also, people have different opinions, which can escalate into a fight.

2.  Health

When you know someone, like a returning client, talking about health if it comes up is okay. However, when you are at an event, meeting new people to secure a connection, it's not okay. Talking about your fitness regime or diet or any health issues can come across as boorish. It looks like you are a self-absorbent person, and frankly, it can make people awkward.

A normal, how you do? is enough. You don’t need to get into details about your or another person’s health.

3.  Office Gossip

Gossiping about your office is a no-go. We all have stories about our office. Stories about a colleague or boss or anything that you feel keeps you at night is gossip. And when you talk about all this at a networking event, it is the worst thing you can do. You are trying to build a connection to better your professional life. It will do you no good to talk about your professional issues in such a setting.

4.  In-depth conversation about family

A normal how is your partner or do you children is okay. Anything more or in-depth like your daughter dating someone. Or how your relationship with your kids is out of the question. You will not like it if your mailmen ask you these intimate questions? Right? So why bring it up in a networking setting?

5.  Finances

Talking about investment plans or options is okay. But no one likes people interrogating them about their personal finances. So, steer clear of this topic.
