4 tips that can help you collect debt with ease

Debt collection is a form of salesmanship that you must learn. A debt collector is a bridge between a creditor and the delinquent. To recover the debt that a debtor owes to the creditor, you need to be calm. Use persuasion instead of threatening or arguing with the debtor to pay.

Arguing or scaring a debtor into paying is easy and will do the job, but it will ruin the creditor’s relationship with the debtor.
That is why you should use different methods. Like starting the conversation by asking why the delinquent is not able to pay the debt. The answer may surprise you because hardly anyone will say that they are not paying because they don’t want to.

Here are some tips that help you collect the debt with ease.

1. Determine the right time to collect
This point is for a creditor, whether you have an in-house debt collector or you will hire a third party collector, first decide when the right time to start this process is. It is because once you work with a collector, it will affect your relationship with the customer.
So, take your time and figure out when you want to start the debt collection process. Should you wait a month or three, add depends on the nature of the debt and your business.

2. Start with a gentle reminder
The next step is to remind the debtor gently about his/her debt. Tell them that you are just confirming that the debtor is aware of the debt. It sometimes helps them pay the debt instantly as other bills may make a debtor forget about the debt.

3. Demand payment
If reminding gently about the payment is not working with the debtor, it is time to show them that you are serious. It doesn’t mean that you have to be aggressive or hostile. You need to firm, but gentle in the way you talk. Let the debtor know that you want the money back, and they can either pay upright or pay on a certain date. Offer them the option to pay in installments too.

4. Take a stronger approach
If this approach also doesn’t work, it is time to take a more serious approach. That is, issuing the debtor, a letter from the court saying that you are suing the debtor is usually enough for people who want to pay, to start a conversation with the collector and craft a way to pay.
If a debtor has issues like job problems or so on, offer them settlements or negotiate the price if you can.
You have to emphatic to their problems so that you get the money, but don’t lose the customer too.
